Research Philosophy
Four statements: operations is a science, real environments come first, reproducible or it does not count, and theory must be able to land. Heterogeneity is not experimental noise but an essential feature of the problem.
Four Statements
1. Operations Is a Science
We reject treating operations as an engineer's craft. A craft cannot be taught, compared or accumulated; a science can. The work is to abstract the patterns that recur in operations into describable structures — the consistency of configuration, the reversibility of change, the transitivity of dependency, the blast radius of a fault — and to give those structures measurable properties.
2. Real Environments Come First
The most common failure in operations research is an elegant conclusion drawn on a simplified model that does not hold in a real environment because of heterogeneity. All research is conducted in environments containing multiple equipment vendors, multiple virtualisation platforms and multiple OS versions — heterogeneity is not experimental noise but an essential feature of the problem.
3. Reproducible or It Does Not Count
Every result carries a complete environment description, execution procedure and raw record, so that others can reproduce it. That requirement in turn shapes the method — because to let someone else reproduce it, the researcher must first write every step down clearly, which is precisely what operations research itself argues for.
4. Theory Must Be Able to Land
We do not pursue elegance for its own sake. A result that cannot, within a foreseeable time, become an executable method, a checkable criterion or teachable material is not treated as a priority. That trade-off gives the Institute a lower density of results but a higher rate of adoption.
